Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica to see many species of migrating birds. The best month to visit this Wildlife Refuge is December because of the hundreds of migratory birds that stop here to feed, in their journey from the northern hemisphere to the southern hemisphere. The Refuge is a shallow marshy wetland, the third largest wetland in the world, formed by the overflow of two rivers (Rio Frio River and Monica River), and covers an area of 916,000 hectares. Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge is the heart of a new UNESCO biosphere reserve named “Water And Peace”. Besides de wetlands, the refuge also protects rivers and tropical humid forest.

It is an amazing place for bird watching. Among the bird species found in this area are american wigeon, ibis, cormorants, storks, herons, roseate spoonbills, blue winged teal,  tree ducks,  snail kite, and the Nicaraguan grackle, among many others.

Visitors coming from San Jose should take the Interamerican Highway going north, taking the San Ramon exit, and passing through the Arenal Volcano Areas. From La Fortuna is about 1,5 hour trip going through papaya, banana, and pineapple plantations.
