While much of Costa Rica has been deforested to open space to agricultural activities and cattle, the country has managed to protect a large proportion of its land. It is even possible to say that Costa Rica is protecting more area than any other country in the world. The National Conservation Areas System (SINAC) protects more than 186 areas, including 32 national parks, 8 biological reserves, 13 forest reserves, and 51 wildlife refuges. The National Parks and Wildlife Refuges of Costa Rica are managed by the Ministerio de Ambiental y Energia (MINAE).
