The Miravalles Volcano is another of the seven active volcanoes in Costa Rica, located in Guanacaste, around 34 km from Liberia. It is an andesitic stratovolcano, of 2028 meters high above sea level, which formed the so called caldera during several major explosive eruptions. These eruptions produced great amounts of dacitic-rhyolitic pyroclastic flows between about 1.5 and 0.6 million years ago. However, the only recorded eruption was a small steam explosion in 1946. It is now one of the largest developed geothermal field in Costa Rica, due to its great underground reservoir of geotermic activity. In the area can be found primary forest and a beautiful cloud forest.
