Poas Volcano is an active stratovolcano located in central Costa Rica, within the Poas Volcano National Park. It has two crater lakes near its summit; the active crater has small lakes of molten sulfur water. The other crater is now a lake called Botos, and it is home of many flora and fauna species in the forest, but little to none marine life. Poas Volcano has erupted 39 times since 1828 and continues to have frequent geyser-like eruptions. The last major volcanic activity recorded for Poas Volcano was in 1910, when tons of ashes were expelled from the main crater. It is considered the largest active crater in the world, with about 1.6 km. wide and 320 meters deep.
