Turrialba

The name Turrialba (originally Torre Alba) means, white tower in old Spanish. It has its origins in the enormous columns of white smoke which arose from the then-active volcano. Turrialba is a great scenic beauty, attractions, and proximity to San Jose. Turrialba is a busy town, and recently it has become a touristic center of adventure tours. Visitors looking for an adrenaline experience, could find white water rafting, canyoning, kayaking, canopy, rappel, four wheelers, horseback riding, biking, among many others.
Just a few kilometers from the town, is the famous institute called CATIE (Center from Tropical Agronomy Research and Teaching); importan reserach work about agronomy, reforestation and other nature like topics. Turrialba is also the center point to go to the Guayabo National Monument, which is a site of pre-Columbian center located on the slope of Volcan Turrialba. Turrialba Volcano, of 3.328 meters high above sea level, was dormant for over 100 years until it became active again recently. In January of 2009, some acid rain killed a lot of vegetation around the volcano.
